Safety and Health

Comparative analysis

  • Three fatalities occurred underground in 2006 in relation to five fatalities in 2005.
  • A regression in 2006 is noted relating to reportable accidents.
  • A reduction in lost time injuries was achieved in 2006.
  • Total accidents show a reduction from 2005 to 2006.

The analysis graph is indicative of the significant risks as reported across the mine.

During the year a key focus had been to raise the awareness on the following risk protocols, namely:

  • trucks and tramming related incidents;
  • scraper cleaning related incidents; and
  • material handling

Marginal success was achieved with trucks and tramming and scraper cleaning.

Material handling related injuries showed a slight increase.

There were no objectives set for 2005 and 2006 in terms of targets; therefore the overall performance is only measurable on actual statistics.

The focus on Safety and Health in the operations continues as the number one priority for management in 2007.
